Talking about the ‘cloud’ is all the rage in technology right now and justifiably so, it is our future!  Last year we began telling any client purchasing a new server that this would be the last they would buy, when it’s time for the next one we’ll put you in the cloud.

For those of you who may not be familiar, reference Trent’s last blog on the topic:  http://www.umbrella-ms.com/2011/07/whats-in-the-cloud/

With that said, when considering cloud solutions, do your due diligence as there are some companies that are a lot of talk and little substance.  We are in the process of moving a new client from a ‘fake cloud’ to an in-house server and infrastructure.  Three years ago they were sold on a ‘cloud’ solution which has caused consistent problems for their practice.  This solution turned out to be nothing more than remote access from their office (similar to how you might connect to your work PC from home).  This is not a cloud solution and is not scalable, practical, or cost effective when planning your eventual transition to the ‘true cloud’ (way too many ‘quotes’ in this post).

It was tough explain to this new client that this would also be the last server they would also buy as they were under the impression they had already made the leap; fortunately they see the value in bringing it back in house with a prudent transition plan to make the move in the next five years when this server is retired.

There are many great hosted solutions out there, just properly vet the vendors you are working with and lean on those in the know to help guide you through the process.  If you don’t already have a trusted relatioship, give us a call.  It’s what we do!
